AI Highlights
  • - HFH cleared trees nearby.
  • - House built 10 ft from property line.
  • - Water runoff toward my property flooded the front yard.

God bless Jimmie Carter and the good he did. Also bless Habitat for Humanity for the good it does.

My experience, however, has not been so pleasant. There was a beautiful mature wooded acre next to me. HFH came in, then clear-cut and bulldozed every mature tree and living plant in sight. Then, even though there was a full acre of room, they dug *** and built a house 10 feet from my property line!

They put the noisy heat pump blower right next to my back deck instead of on the other side of their house. They placed the backyard water runoff hoses so they would terminate at my property line and the water would run across my property instead of further away down the hill into a creek. On the street, they built an asphalt curb which stopped in front of my house, so the rainwater floods all over my front yard. When finished, they also dumped a quarter ton of leftover gravel in my backyard and left it there.

HFH did leave one huge mature elm tree on my side of the property line, but they wanted to cut it down too! Why? Why? The woodcutters surreptitiously came in one morning without telling me, but fortunately, I caught them.

They lied by telling me the tree was dead. I put a screeching halt to it. During the noisy construction, they put a portable malodorous outhouse 10 feet from my front porch on the street, unlocked, so every vagrant around could use it at all hours, and then a huge uncovered unlocked dumpster next to it, which attracted every garbage bag in town, both of these all in the hot summer. Then the clients moved in.

Have you read 'Tobacco Road' by Erskine Caldwell?

In six months, a front yard of tires, carts, gasoline cans, chairs, barrels, broken lawnmowers, two dead cars, and a scrap wood pile, cigarette smoke, yelling, and horns blowing, along with a constant string of cars coming and going. If you see the 'Habitat for Humanity' car eyeing your neighborhood, talk to them and find out what's going on before you lose your repose.

Preferred solution: Just publish my experience as a caveat

User's recommendation: If you see a Habitat for Humanity rep eyeing your neighborhood, find out what they are up to, before they destroy your repose

Sold us a junk appliance.

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - As a senior citizen, the appliance failed in 60 days.
  • - Return promised with receipt, then refused; staff surrounded me, warned illegal dumping.
Updated by user Apr 27, 2025

No the issue was not resolved and I didn't expect it to be. Pissed off customers do not matter to them and that is obvious in the way they treat people.

Original review Apr 12, 2025

Being a senior citizen and partially disabled I look for deals on things we need. A friend suggested this place for my appliance purchase.

Big mistake! Appliance didn't last 60 days!. When I first called about it the guy on the phone said if I brought it back with a receipt he would take it back because it was defective. When I got there that all changed, and he refused to take it back.

I asked about just dropping it off for parts or whatever, and he told me to take it around back. Once again a lie. Instead, he sends 3 guys out there to surround me acting in an implied threatening manner and refusing to take the item. I asked about tossing it in the junk, and they told me if I tried that they'd call the cops on me for illegal dumping.

Great way to treat senior citizens. I don't recommend buying anything here and there are better places to donate to as well.

User's recommendation: Don't recommend buying anything here and there are better places to donate to as well.

Absolutely don't use them for anything?

AI Highlights
  • - Windsor bathroom remodel by Ed Gee was a mess.
  • - The sink chipped; jacuzzi tub installed.
  • - Unsealed plumbing caused crawl-space leaks.

Absolutely don't use them for anything Had a bathroom remodel in Windsor Ontario under Ed Gee. Mess from beginning to end.

Chipped the sink bringing in. Installed a jacuzzi tub. Plumbing joints were not sealed or siliconed which led to leaking in the crawl space. Motor for jacuzzi tub was put where you lay your head which meant no way to relax and timer was put on opposite wall, no way to reach.

Shower head was installed way to low and bath tub faucet was laid flush on tub, no way to access when it leaked. Put in upgrades and said that he would absorb the costs which he did not.

Money put out for a terrible job. A real mess with endless problems!

User's recommendation: Absolutely don't use them for anything!

Never use this company, Windsor Ontario.

AI Highlights
  • - Joints were not sealed, causing crawl space leaks.
  • - They promised to absorb cost but did not.
  • - Ed Gee led.
  • - Shower head was too low.
  • - Jacuzzi motor was noisy.

Volunteers ripped out my old bathroom and installed a jacuzzi tub. Later found out they did not seal or silicone joints on plumbing which led to leaking in the crawl space.

Kept recommending upgrades and said they'd absorb the cost...they didn't

Ed Gee was in charge of the project, a mess from start to finish. Installed the shower head way too low. Put the jacuzzi motor at the end where you lay your head and therefore the noise from the motor made it impossible to relax.

Chipped the sink bringing it in. Timer was put on an opposite wall...it goes on and on!

User's recommendation: Absolutely don't use Habitat for Humanity for anything!

HHabitat appears to violate HUD Law all the way to Corporate Headquartersers

AI Highlights
  • - Habit shows little accountability or oversight up to corporate HQ.
  • - Federal HUD-law agencies show little accountability or oversight.

Habit seems to do as they please with no or very little accountability or over-site going all the way up to the corporate headquarters. They also seem to be held to very little accountability or over-site by the government agencies that are suppose to hold them accountable under federal HUD law. They seem to think they are above the law.

User's recommendation: They need to be investigated at a higher government agency level

Worked for habitat for humanity of desmoines Iowa worst place I have ever worked. The treet there employees very bad very High turn over. Upper management should not be in the role they are in.

AI Highlights
  • - Treat employees like people; work with them.
  • - Understaffed stores cause injuries.
  • - Executives earn too much; more help for people in the USA is needed.

Treet there employees like people. Work with them not just fire them.

How about taking care of some of or military people. Maybe help more people in the USA.

People up top make way to much money for a non-profit. They run the stores under staff that's why so many injuries.

User's recommendation: Donate some where else. Your donations are not used in no homes they buy high priced new materials

Donation nightmare

AI Highlights
  • - Customer unhappy after pickup; scratches noticed on leather sofa.
  • - Paid over $1000 for a newer USB-enabled sofa; company wants only new products.

This company is disgusting!! I scheduled a pickup and the driver noticed 'minor scratches' on a leather sofa.

I paid over $ 1000 for this newer sofa with a USB and electric, reclining chairs. I suggested a certain product to rub it out and said they only want "new" products.

Is this a non-profit!?!? Sounds like a scam and only want FREE products for their profit.

Cons:
  • Scam company
  • No customer service

Preferred solution: For them to pickup the sofa

User's recommendation: STAY AWAY, SCAM!!!

I just tried to drop off a cabinet (brand new) and a Goergia O'Keeffe picture (3' x 4'). Both are in excellent shape.

The manager said he had too many pictures and didn't want the cabinet. They are very selective on what they want, and prices are way too high.

Pissed because I have not received the purchase receipt for a installed water heater 10-9-24

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - After paying 8% in full, Habitat First stopped engaging; the contractor demanded a water heater receipt, and Rheem says it's required.

I tried to solve the issue with the contact person from habitat first and I feel that after she got me to sign off and i paid my 8%in full, she just threw me away. The contractor also threw me away after asking for a purchase receipt for the water heater he had installed 10-9-24, Rheem warranty department told me that I needed it for the product and I told him that but he sent me a invoice from the plumber stating what he removed and installed, I don't understand why I have a problem getting a purchase receipt/proof of purchase for future repairs. Am I stupid or what.

Habitat monopolizes government funds

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • - The company monopolizes Owner/Builder government funding; reviewer calls it a racket and scam and asks where other nonprofits offer 0% funding.

Why is this COMPANY allowed to monopolize government funding for Owner/Builder?? You can't get help from them so you can't utilize the program so it's a racket and scam.

No organization should have control of any government programs especially when they can't provide adequate service.

Where are the other nonprofits to assist homeowners in getting this 0% interest rate. I don't need Habitat to help me build, I was a Builder.

Cons:
  • Monopoly

Preferred solution: Help using government program with 0% interest without Habitat who don't have the resources

Never Again Will Donate Here

I was nice enough to donate practically brand new bedroom furniture and when I called to ask them what they would accept, the office lady said that they would take all the items we had discussed except for mattresses and any type of bed frames. I told them I had two headboards and footboards that are part of the set, and they said they would take it.

When the RUDE pick up man from Toms River, NJ ReStore came with the Organizations truck to pick up the furniture, he wouldn't take the headboards and footboards and said that it wouldn't be a complete set. That is totally ridiculous as the set included the dresser/mirror, night table and headboard and footboard. He said it is HIS discretion what to take and when I argued the fact he said that he can leave and not take ANYTHING at all! Well I told them, they wasted my time and told them to impolitely to get the "@ell" out.

They asked I give them at $10 donation upon delivery.

Well, I had a $100 check to give to them and too bad they are not getting that or any other donation from me. Terrible...You would think that you're helping people that "don't have" it, but I guess they need to make their share first.

User's recommendation: Look to donate elsewhere
